About this deal

I'm sure there's a bottleneck somewhere that's not allowing the full capabilities of the Western Digital WD_BLACK 2TB SN770. A single-sided 2280 PCB with a tiny SanDisk 4-channel controller upfront, some sort of coprocessor to the right of the controller, and a single flash package at the rear of the PCB. But what that means is the 2TB model, just as it's spec'd by WD, will not be as fast as the 1TB model due to its 1024Gbit die composition. A configuration like this is usually associated with entry-level, lower-performing drives, but as you’ll see a little later, the SN770 performs well where it matters most.

In short, we believe that this is the world's best way to test an SSDs gaming prowess and accurately compare it against competing SSDs.Yes it is slightly slower than the min recommended spec of 5500 mb r/w, I based this purchase on the DigitalFoundry testing on this SSD which showed very minimal loading time differences between the original SSD installed vs this in the M2 slot. IO performance according to ATTO had theWD Black SN770 finishing about in the middle of the pack once again in the read test. Like the WD Black SN850 though, the SN770 is a PCIe Gen 4 x 4 drive, designed to offer increased bandwidth and lower latency than older PCIe Gen 3 drives, but it’s also a cost-reduced solutions that eschews a DRAM cache and leverages a scaled back controller. Get up to 20% more power efficiency at maximum speed over the previous generation 3 (1TB model) for an even better overall gaming experience on your portable rig.

In real-world applications, we’ve found that the only time running low on DRAM cache has mattered was in very large file copies, not in random access use. This drive clearly demonstrated that power-hungry, fire-breathing 8-channel controllers and expensive onboard DRAM are no longer required for hyper-class performance. We’ve partnered with Ontrack to provide protection for routine and extreme data loss scenarios such as drive failure, viruses, and software issues. When using with the My Cloud NAS products, the software must be running from an operating system on the same local network.Testing with CDM reveals Western Digital's sequential throughput specs for the 2TB model to be pretty much spot on, if not a bit on the conservative side. Western Digital has installed 112-layer TLC NAND flash on the Black SN770, the flash chips are made by Toshiba.
